Style Guide

Remember it’s a GREAT Reason to Dress Up!

Take the extra time to put together a nice outfit that will make you FEEL good about yourself. It’s probably the first time in years you are getting photos taken, so it’s a special occasion, right?!

Coordinate but DON’T MATCH!

You should not to be “too” matchy-matchy for portrait or family sessions. This means that you choose maybe 3-4 neutral colors as a base, and then have every person use those colors to coordinate their own outfit.

Fall Color Schemes

  • Fall outfits are all about layers. Wear warm tones such as:
  • Maroon and Brown
  • Tan and Denim
  • Cream, Navy, Tan
  • Denim, Crimson, Yellow

Winter Color Schemes

Winter’s the perfect time to bundle up and bring out those sweaters and furry scarves! This holiday season highlights cold tones like:

  • Glitter and White
  • Crimson and Navy
  • Crimson, Tan, Blue
  • Grey, Black, Red
  • Green, Rose, Copper

Spring Color Schemes

Spring is all about vibrancy. Try the following sample combinations to set apart your subjects from the surroundings:

  • White and Blush
  • Teal and Blush
  • White, Tan, Light Blue
  • White, Navy, Yellow

Summer Color Schemes

Ask the family to find outfits with the warmest of colors like:

  • Teal and Orange
  • White and Tan
  • Green, Yellow, Blue
  • White, Tan, Light Blue
  • Ditch the Obnoxious Patterns

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t wear a beautiful floral dress, plaid or stripes for your photos. What it means is to keep it simple to a certain degree with only ONE session member wearing a print.

If your want to wear that patterned dress for your photo, I advise to keeps your accessories simpler. It’s all about balance. Don’t overwhelm the eye with too many colors and patterns in your photos.

Stick to Neutrals

Neutral colors are always a great option, not only because they go well together, but because they are classic. Matching outfits in colors such as grey, tan, cream, blue, lighter browns, white are also great.

Consider the Clothing Texture

Textures add visual interest to any outfits. When you add textures through outfits and accessories, you are also making even the perfect family picture more lively and interesting. One way is to look for outfits in fabrics like wool, chambray, lace, faux fur, cable knits, herringbone, and tweed.

Coordinate with the Location

Clients should rely on the photographer to help them prepare what to wear for a perfect photo session. I am available to help my clients choose a color scheme or palette for the clothes that will complement the home decor, setting or location. I make sure they pick items of clothing in colors that will not compete with the background or their home decor. For beach-themed family photos, your clients will probably go barefoot. Men can wear for family photos roll-up sleeves and pants for a more casual or comfortable look. Meanwhile, women can have fun with the breeze using maxi dresses or flowing skirts.

Help Flatter the Body!

Balance Between Loose and Oversized Clothing

One of the best tips to follow is to avoid wearing too tight or baggy clothes for photos.

Oversized and fitted clothes are not for everyone. Such outfits can sometimes distort proportions on a photo. One of my jobs as a professional photographer is to make sure my clients look their best.

Be Cautious About Horizontal Stripes

Clothes with wide, horizontal stripes can make a person’s figure appear bigger in a photo. This is why it’s best to choose clothes with vertical lines that can make the body look slender and taller.

If you still want to wear clothes with horizontal stripes, I recommend outfits with narrow, horizontal lines that can somehow make a slimming illusion.

WHAT IF I WEAR GLASSES?

Glasses can cause problems unless you have non-reflective lenses. Make sure that if you do need to wear glasses they do not tint and shade your eyes when you go outside, and that the light does not create a glare in the glass.

I highly recommend that contacts are worn at the time of your session, if in fact you are concerned about glare. Or simply just remove them between shoots.

MAKEUP, HAIR & NAILS.

It is preferred that you have your makeup and hair professionally applied for your portrait session but is not necessary. It will make a huge difference in how you look and feel, as long as you feel and look fabulous. Please have your hair and makeup finished before your scheduled session. Please book a stylist well before your shoot. Your nails should be manicured. No chipped nail polish.

DO YOU HAVE ANY HAIR AND MAKEUP TIPS?

Use a little more makeup and hairspray than you normally would, you’ll want your make-up to show up a little bit more in your photos and it can get windy outside so the hairspray will help keep your hair in place. Ladies, when applying lipstick, avoid red lipstick. The red pigments in the lipstick turn black in black & white photos, making your lips appear black. Do not go to the tanning bed and overly tan before your shoot, sometimes fake skin tones appear more orange than brown which is not flattering. Natural bronzer or bronzing powder is the way to go. If you worry about the appearance of a double chin in photos, rub a little bit of bronzer or bronzer powder that is 1 shade darker than your natural skin tone under your chin and around your neck to create the appearance of a shadow on your neck. (I use this shading technique sometimes in retouching too) If you’d like to book a professional hairstylist and/or make-up artist, please be sure to check with their availability when booking a shoot with me.

TIP.

Layout all the clothing onto a bed. Shoes, socks, stockings – everything! Then, take a careful look at the collection. If your eye goes to any one item, in particular, you can be certain that the same thing will happen in a photograph. That item should be changed.

SESSION INVESTMENT FAQ`s

HOW DO I RESERVE A PHOTO SESSION WITH YOU?

First, contact me with a date or an estimated date you are looking to book. Once we have agreed on a date a digital contract will be emailed to you. A signed digital contract and retainer is required when booking a session with us. Your retainer is due at the time of signing the contract to hold your session date.

HOW MUCH IS THE RETAINER?

All portrait sessions require a 50% of session cost retainer

WHY IS A RETAINER REQUIRED?

Your retainer secures your session date. The retainer is non-refundable.

WHEN IS MY REMAINING BALANCE DUE?

The remaining balance for your session is due on the session date if you are paying by cash or PayPal. If you are paying by check the remaining balance is due a week before your session date. Weddings Balances are due two weeks before your ceremony date.

WHAT FORM OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?

Cash, Zelle, Square, Apple Pay and Venmo (Venmo and Square accepts all major credit cards)

IF I CANCEL WILL I GET MY RETAINER BACK?

If you cancel you will not receive your retainer back. This covers any loss in the form of lost bookings. However, I do understand that unforeseen events can happen, if so contact me and will discuss and agree to move your session to another date.

IS THERE EVER A TRAVEL FEE?

Most session have no travel fee. If we do travel 50 miles or more outside Medina, OH a travel fee will be applied to your session's final balance. If a travel fee is required, it will be discussed during your booking to ensure no surprise fee is added to your session.

PERMITS AND FEES?

If there is a photography permit required for your location, then you will be required to acquire and pay for that. If any special parking permits or city parking is required, then we will keep the receipts and invoice you for that after the session.

WHAT TIME OF DAY WILL MY SESSION BE?

We will shoot your outdoor session either right after sunrise (summer time 7:30am) or a few hours before sunset (summer time 7:00 / 7:30 pm). Why? Because the best available light is right after sunrise and before sunset. If you have to have a mid-day session, let me know and will work to find a location that best blocks overhead harsh sunlight. Please keep in mind lighting makes all the difference in your images.

WHAT IF IT RAINS OR THERE IS NO SUNSET?

If there is rain in the forecast, we will see if it's worth waiting out the weather. Some days may only have an afternoon shower, so we may not need to reschedule your session. If the day is a wash out we would reschedule to the best available date that works for the both of us.

If you really wanted that sunset/golden hour session and it's an overcast sky we can reschedule or move forward with your session. Cloudy and overcast days create great lighting and images too!

WHAT IF MY CHILD OR MYSELF ARE SICK?

If anyone is sick, we will reschedule your session. Your deposit will transfer to another date if this should ever happen.

CAN WE BRING OUR PET(S)?

ABSOLUTELY! I LOVE pets (Especially dogs) and since they are a part of your life, they should be in your photos! Just remember to keep your pet on a leash during your shoot and remember to bring something with you to clean up after them. Feel free to bring treats with you too, they tend to cooperate much more when they have an enticing reward in front of them.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE UNTIL I GET MY IMAGES?

It will be 2-4 weeks from the time of your session before you will receive your images. You will be emailed a link to your online gallery where you can view, share, download, and order images. I usually post a preview on my Facebook or Instagram account within 48 hours of your session!

Elopements and intimate Weddings will be delivered in 6 to 8 weeks.

I HAD MY PHOTO SHOOT AND IT WAS AWESOME! I WANT TO TELL EVERYONE. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO DO THAT?

This is why I do what I do – to make people happy. I would love for you to tell your friends and family about me and my photography services. In fact, a majority of my business comes from word-of-mouth referrals. I would also love to receive your positive reviews on my Google and Facebook pages. Thanks and I hope to work with you again soon!
